Oakland A’s closer takes another turn

 

Fuentes notched his first save in his first save opportunity since May 8 and made his first appearance since criticizing manager Bob Geren on Monday over Geren’s use of the bullpen.

In the aftermath of that drama, Geren named Balfour his closer in place of the struggling Fuentes.

But Balfour pitched the eighth Saturday to set the table for Fuentes, who snapped a streak of four consecutive appearances with a loss, an Oakland record for a reliever.

“We’re all just keeping Andrew (Bailey’s) seat warm,” Fuentes said. “It doesn’t matter who is pitching the eighth or ninth. When he gets here, he’s probably the best man for the job.”
